Lake Superior: The worlds largest fresh water hot tub

Posted by on April 7, 2007

A story today in the globe about Lake Superior getting warmer. Apparently the temperature of the world's largest fresh water lake is rising at a yearly rate faster than the environment around it. Yes, this is happening because of Global Warming, and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration - a US government organization that did the study - certainly doesn't dance around the issue. According to the study, in another 30 years you will never see another piece of ice on Lake Superior again.

I've visited Superior every summer since the 70's, and every year the water level decreases, and the cleanliness of the water gets just a little less sparkling. Water levels can be partially blamed on winter evaporation, but the pollution can obviously be blamed on industry.

The great lakes makes up 90% of all of the United States' fresh water supply and provides drinking water to about 8% of the North American population, so it's no wonder how we could plunder such a crucial resource. But then again, for as long as we can turn on a tap, or squeeze the trigger on the nozzle at the gas station, or throw a load of garbage down some chute... for as long as the environmental impact of our actions is out of site then our precious resources will only be so when they are gone.  But let's just let our children worry about that, shall we?
